Home Thematic Groups Transport Group

The Devizes Transport Group is concerned with cycling, walking, public transport, traffic and highways throughout the Devizes Area. It faces considerable challenges: heavy air pollution from too much traffic especially along the approach roads into Devizes, HGVs rumbling through a number of villages, dangerous roads for cyclists,  with few exceptions, a very poor bus service and no railway station.

The Group believes that traffic and pollution in Devizes itself will only be reduced by tackling car commuting and the school run.

The position is not entirely bleak: employers are being encouraged to develop Green Travel Plans for their employees, NHS Wiltshire is promoting public health and fitness and Wiltshire Council is developing a new Devizes Transport Plan as part of its Local Transport Plan (2012 – 2026).

As part of our Leave Your Car at Home campaign we have set out our Cycle Strategy here and map of proposed routes here.  Through the Area Board’s Devizes Traffic Group we are pressing for highway, signage and cycle parking improvements.   We are also growing a new group to promote cycling in and around Devizes but we are keen to engage with others.   A launch event in Devizes is being planned for 6th October.  Can you help?

With other community groups we are working on bus information, access to rail, car hire and taxi bus schemes. We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in any of these.

DCAP’s transport concerns and proposals can be found in “Devizes Community Area Plan 2012”.  Click on the transport section here.

NEXT MEETING:  Wednesday 4th July at 5.30pm (venue to be confirmed). Members of the public are very welcome.
